YOU can help preserve the heritage of the San Diego County back country.
The Mountain Empire Historical Society operates the Gaskill Brothers' Stone Store Museum in Campo, California. In addition to the Museum and its artifact collections, the Society offers publications, educational events and an archive of historic documents, manuscripts, photographs, and ephemera from the Mountain Empire of the border Californians.
The Society is a non-profit entity operated by volunteers and supported by donations from members of the public who appreciate the importance of knowing our roots and keeping them intact.
Membership in the Society is one of the ways to help support its operations. Society memberships allow free visits, including guests, to the Stone Store Museum, a 10% discount on Gift Shop purchases, a subscription to Mountain Heritage, the back country's quarterly historic digest, and access to special Society events, presentations and field trips.
If you would like to get actively involved, we are looking for volunteers in all aspects of our museum and operations. These include, storekeeper/docent, office management, archive data base management and input, media, field surveys, oral history recording, research, artifact conservation, military history and story research/writing to name a few.
